About Me

I like to think that I am good at what I do, but you don't have to take my word for it. You can read about my Writers in Paris Walking Tours on TimeOut: Paris' online guide book. I am also very honored to have my tours named as one of the Top Ten Literary Walking Tours of the World by Lonely Planet.

This series of walks marks the latest step in my Parisian evolution.  My book Writers in Paris, Literary Lives in the City of Light, is this venture’s father, to be sure. But there are other things too. To wit: my quarter of a century living in Paris, my Access Paris travel guides for HarperCollins and many other writings about Paris, my studies of Balzac, Proust, Camus, and others at Yale, my fascination with the expatriate life when I was young – Hemingway, Joyce, Beckett – leading me to make my first trip out of the U.S. when I was twenty to (guess where) Paris.  And then there’s my long career as a documentary writer/producer for CBS 60 Minutes and other broadcasts, continuing here with my award-winning filmmaker wife Joanne Burke as my partner.  My long years of visual story-telling deeply influenced my book Writers in Paris, and it continues to do so in my walks.  As one of my walkers put it, “It seemed that the writers’ spirits were walking along with us, pointing out their favorite haunts and whispering their stories in our ears.”
